Frequently Asked Questions

What is the American University of Nigeria?

The American University of Nigeria is new. It was founded by the Vice President of Nigeria, Abubakar Atiku, in partnership with the American University in Washington, DC, and with a group of prominent Nigerians interested in creating a world-class, American-style University in Nigeria. The goal of AUN is not only to have the finest campus facilities, but to offer the highest quality academic programs in West Africa. The University, located in Yola, Adamawa State, welcomed its first class to the University on September 9, 2005.

The University is building a permanent campus on a beautiful 500 hectare site. The first phase of construction includes five new buildings: a Multi-Purpose Building, an Arts and Sciences building, a male dormitory, a female dormitory, and a student cafeteria. All buildings are multi-story, air conditioned, and have wireless Internet connectivity. Classes on the new campus began in September 2006. AUN is a truly "American" university, as about 89% of the faculty are Americans, have taught in, and/or have received their PhDs from American institutions of higher education.

Since part of the American University of Nigeria's mission is to provide the next generation of leadership in West Africa and stimulate economic development in the region, the curricula have been designed to ensure that students will have the skills needed to pursue rewarding careers. Every student, regardless of major, receives high-level training in information technology and also receives fundamental education in business and entrepreneurship. AUN teaches students how to succeed.

Do students have to choose their field of study right away?

No. For planning purposes, students are asked to indicate their preferred major at the time of application. However, most students will spend their first year studying general education courses in the arts and sciences. Students can change their majors as late as their second year of study and still graduate on time. This gives students the opportunity to explore sample courses in a variety of fields before making a firm commitment to a particular discipline of study.

Do students at the University have access to the most up-to-date technology?

Yes. AUN prides itself on its state-of-the-art technology, which surpasses that found at many prestigious American and international universities. Upon admission, each incoming student receives a new laptop computer fully loaded with essential software tools. With the laptop, students can access high speed wireless Internet from any location on campus, including dormitories, classrooms, the library, the cafeteria, and even outside the buildings. In addition, the University offers fully wired desktop computers in the library and in computer labs. Technology is used widely on campus, and, regardless of major, every AUN graduate leaves the University with high-level technical skills.

What is "American" about the University?

The University is structured like American Universities and was created in partnership with American University in Washington, DC. Most of the professors and administrators are American, and most have many years of experience working in some of the finest universities in the United States. Class sizes are small and student-centered. Students are encouraged to communicate, think critically, and take advantage of professors’ office hours and tutorials outside of class. As in American universities in the US, students have ample opportunity to interact one-on-one with faculty and staff. Semesters, testing periods, holidays, and report cards are scheduled in a standard way and are consistent from year to year. AUN's American-style credit hour system is compatible with transfer to universities in the United States, and students from American universities in the U.S. are able to transfer course credit to AUN.
