Welcome to the American University of Nigeria
The 2008-2009 academic year ushers in significant milestones in the life of our young but pre-eminent institution, the American University of Nigeria. Not only are we witnessing ambitious development of our infrastructure, but our student population will exceed 1000 students by year's end.
By that time, as well, four new dormitories will be built, and the beautifully designed library featuring a three-storey atrium and a tiered auditorium will be half way to completion. These structures will round out the first phase of campus development that has seen the construction of 14 additional buildings in fewer than five years.
Important as these physical landmarks are, the achievement of which we are most proud is the impending graduation of the first entering class. Those students, admitted as freshmen in 2005, will graduate in May 2009. This proudly anticipated event will be witnessed by parents and relatives, faculty and staff, friends and supporters, including noted philanthropists whose extraordinary vision led to the founding of the university.
By graduation, the number of faculty will have grown in excess of 70, and three internationally experienced deans will be at the helm of the academic schools. They, along with administrators and staff members, infuse the campus with fresh intellectual energy as the university pursues its mission of providing world class, American-style university education in sub-Saharan Africa. The university will have also renewed its founding partnership with the American University in Washington, DC. Top scholars, excellent research, and valedictory teaching will continue to be supported by our state-of-the-art science and IT laboratories and classrooms on our Internet-enabled, wireless campus.
The future is bright. We share this optimism with the parents and families who have enrolled or will enroll their children in our university, with the students who are dedicated to their studies and to our cardinal values of quality, integrity and style, with our Founder and others whose unparalleled philanthropy and gift giving have made this university a reality, with our associates, our host community, and our staff who embody our collective sense of high purpose.
To such people we dedicate our success story so far. To those who are just learning about us, we welcome your interest and support.
Please join with me as we continue to develop the American University of Nigeria into a world class institution of higher education.
Sincerely,
C. Michael Smith, Ph.D.
President, American University of Nigeria
