TIMELINE OF DEVELOPMENT

2003
Jan 2003 Dr. Louis Goodman, dean of the School of International Service at American University (AU), meets with the AUN Planning Committee and provides advice in preparing documents needed to register AUN with the National Universities Commission of Nigeria (NUC).
Feb 2003 The NUC approves AUN’s application for implementation. The Planning Committee reconstitutes itself as the ABTI University Implementation Committee (AIC).
May 23-31, 2003 An assessment team from AU visits Abuja and Yola, Nigeria, and meets with the AIC. The series of meetings includes AU presenting the findings of its advisory group to the AIC, on May 28, 2003; the Honorable Professor Babalola Borishade, Minister of Education, presents the AIC with the certificate of registration for the American University of Nigeria (then called ABTI-American University).
Nov 14, 2003

HE Atiku Abubakar, Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, on behalf of the American University of Nigeria, Yola (AUN), sign a Memorandum of Understanding, entering into a Management Partnership Accord for AU to provide AUN educational and administrative advice and assistance to build a world-class University in Yola, Nigeria.

Dec 31, 2003

President Ladner, AU and Adamu Abubakar, Chairman of ABTI Schools Ltd., sign a Management Consultancy Agreement.

2004
Jan 2004 AU establishes task forces to assist with and advise on the implementation of various aspects of the AUN project.
Feb 2004 AU establishes a Washington Office for the AUN Project and develops position descriptions and recruitment processes for the President of AUN and the Director of the Washington Office.
Oct 2004 Dr. David Huwiler, Founding President of AUN assumes duty in Yola.
Oct 25, 2004 Groundbreaking ceremony of AUN performed by HE Olusegun Obasanjo, President of Nigeria, and the inaugural meeting of the Board of Trustees.
Nov 2004 President Huwiler embarks on international trips to hire expatriate faculty and staff for AUN.
2005
Mar 2004 New faculty and staff hires for AUN assume duty in Yola.
Mar 21-22, 2005 Second Board of Trustees meeting
Apr 2005 AUN team commences recruiting trips to selected secondary schools in Nigeria, Cameroon and Ghana for its first class of 200 students.
Sep 2005 Commencement of AUN’s inaugural class
2006
Apr 2006 Expected delivery date of first set of AUN buildings by Julius Berger, Nigeria.
