Prof. Macharia is a pan-Africanist who is living the dream of bringing back African experts in the West back to the African continent and while advocating this in his research on International Migration, he is living the example by being here at the AUN. After a prolonged career in leading American institutions of higher learning, UC Berkeley where he did his doctorate on a Fulbright Scholarship, Harvard University, American University, an experience in West Africa engaging enthusiastic youth has been his dream, He is a native of Kenya, East Africa. He is well published and has participated in major international professional meetings, like the International Sociological Congress, Durban, South Africa in July 2006.

  • Studying the informal economy (small scale enterprises and their contribution to development especially in Africa.)
  • Different Ethnic groups and Religious groups engage in the informal economy in historical city of Maiduguri, Borno State, North East Nigeria.
  • International Migration and skilled migration--brain drain, brain drain and possibilities of brain waste. Role of State in Development.
