Professor M’Bayo is recipient of Distinguished Faculty Awards from Bowie State University (USA), George Mason University (USA), and the University of Lagos (NIGERIA), and has served as one of three national ( USA) judges for the A. Phillip Randolph Awards for Excellence in Journalism. He has previously served as UN media consultant to Sierra Leone (1996). With over 20 years of teaching experience at graduate and undergraduate programs at universities in the United Sates and Africa, Professor M’Bayo has received awards from the Poynter Institute of Media Studies, American Society of Newspaper Editors, and the American Press Institute. In 1996, he was nominated for the Wilson H. Elkins Professorship of the University System of Maryland (USA). Professor M’Bayo is the founding editor of the Journal of African Communications, and the Journal of African Social Sciences and Humanities Studies.
