PROFESSOR GIDADO TAHIR

National Coordinator, Universal Basic Education Program, UBE.

He has been overseeing affairs at the UBE since April 2001. Before then Professor Tahir was Executive Secretary, National Commission for Nomadic Education from 1994. Between 1987 and 1994 he became Provost, Federal College of Education Yola. He was Head, Department of Extension Services, Usumanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto. A career teacher since 1974, Professor Tahir received his Ph.D in Education from Indiana University, Bloomington, USA in August 1981. He earlier studied for his Masters degree from the same University in the same field.

A foremost educationist in Nigeria, Dr. Tahir has been Professor of Higher Education at Usumanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto since 1992. During his 30-year teaching career he has held various command positions in leading Universities across Northern Nigeria, including his alma mater, the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He was a member of the UNESCO Mission on the UNDP assisted Mass Literacy Program in Nigeria in 1996. He also holds the memberships of the World Council of Herders, Lucerne, Switzerland as well as the Nigeria Academy of Education.
