Top Contingent of New Faculty Members Arrives in Fall 08
Announcing the signing of eleven new faculty members and two new deans, President Michael Smith commended the university for maintaining high instructional standards in a competitive market.
"We are pleased to welcome such an outstanding group of colleagues to the university," Dr. Smith said. "Every university would be proud to have instructors of this caliber."
The biggest school in the university, Arts and Sciences, welcomes seven teachers in subjects that range from physics and chemistry to writing and international politics. In addition, Professor Osam Edim, who taught as a visiting professor of philosophy the past year, has agreed to join the university in a permanent position as a full professor.
Arts and Sciences also brings on board two economists.
Dr. David 'Skip' Smith from the University of Missouri heads the School of Business and Entrepreneurship. A familiar figure at the Lagos Business School, Dr. Smith has led a series of summer seminars in marketing at LBS for the past decade. He is joined by two full professors, one in finance and one in marketing.
Rounding off the new hires are two assistant professors in Information Technology and Communications.
The new staff continues the tradition of diversity and international teaching experience on campus. Individuals hail from Egypt, India, and the United States, and an increasing number of talented Nigerians and West Africans have made the decision to return to Africa from the American universities where they received academic degrees and held esteemed teaching and administrative posts. "It is also noteworthy that our current excellent staff has undergone minimal attrition," Dr. Michael Smith said. "This means that the university is able not only to build a solid professoriate but retains its best faculty and staff over the long term."
